Eco Fashion Week Report

  • Helping Hands: A Livelihood Approach to Population, Health, and Environment Programs
Proponents of integrated development face significant barriers, but the tide may be turning. To fully harness this momentum, Gib Clarke argues that the population-health-environment (PHE) community must solidify its research base, reach out to new partners, and push for flexible funding and programming. In addition, he writes that PHE programs should add livelihoods as a critical element, and consider adopting a new moniker, ?HELP??Health, Environment, Livelihoods, and Population.

  • Biofuels: Food, Fuel, and Future?
Edited by: Kent H. Hughes and Elizabeth A. Byers The Program on America and the Global Economy (PAGE) and its Global Energy Initiative together with the Brazil Institute, have held a series of conferences that have focused in whole or in part on various developments in the field of biofuels. In the July 23, 2010 conference, PAGE turned to two scholars, C. Ford Runge and Robbin S. Johnson, both with ties to the University of Minnesota, to provide the current state of play in the development of biofuels, particularly in the United States. A second panel moderated by the Brazil Institute's Paulo Sotero focused on biofuels in an international context.

  • Our Shared Future: Environmental Pathways to Peace
How does globalization affect natural resource issues such as water on local, national, and international levels? Can our common dependence on these stressed resources be a force for bringing people together rather than dividing us? What lessons can we learn from sharing insights from communities at these very different levels of organization? In January 2010, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Fetzer Institute invited 22 scholars and practitioners from around the world to a two-day seminar to discuss these questions and the deep connection between caring for the environment and caring for community. This report draws from the rich dialogue of the seminar and seminar papers to share the broad range of experience and the insight of the participants.
